Delivering relief aid to flood-hit Brazil
When heavy rains and storms caused severe floods in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, we were tasked with delivering 600 kg of urgently-needed relief aid to the region. With the main local airport closed in the wake of the disaster, we set about finding a way to get the humanitarian supplies from São Paulo as quickly as possible.
Our Solution
Route: São Paulo > Porto Alegre
Aircraft: Cessna Grand Caravan
With no time to waste, we contacted local airstrips and managed to find an operating aeroclub runaway in the state capital of Porto Alegre.
We sourced a Cessna turboprop for the ‘go-now’ charter, loading the cargo onto the aircraft in boxes which were then packed into pallets secured with safety belts.
With the flight subject to last-minute cancellation due to continuing poor weather, it was a nervous wait until we received the go-ahead to depart from São Paulo.
Once the cargo was in the air, our team continuously monitored the situation in Porto Alegre, ready to divert the plane to a back-up airstrip if the aeroclub had to close.
Luckily, the weather held out, with the cargo arriving in Porto Alegre on schedule for distribution in the affected areas.
