Marrakech is Morocco’s energetic heartbeat, bursting with culture, fragrance and colour. Be prepared for a sensual overload as you’re dazzled by street performers and lose yourself among the medina’s treasure-trove-laden alleys. The bustling Djemaa el-Fna market square is Marrakech’s hub. Things really come alive here after sunset, when the restaurants fill up, musicians strike up, handcarts are piled high with dried fruit and aromatic spices, and storytellers bring urban legends to life. It’s an immersive nightly carnival. If it all gets too much, the perfect respite can be sought in one of the city’s rooftop cafés, where – as with almost every restaurant in the city – tagine, cous cous and refreshing mint tea dominate the menu.
Marrakech has a quieter side, too. Jardin Majorelle is a two-and-a-half-acre botanical garden gifted to the city by fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, where visitors can admire over 300 plant species from five continents. Other Marrakech must-sees include the opulent burial ground of the Saadian Tombs, the 12th-century Koutoubia minaret and the Bahia Palace. For accommodation in Marrakech, we recommend choosing one of its boutique riads – traditional Moroccan residences with rooms facing a serene central courtyard – for an authentic yet super comfortable stay. Or join an illustrious list of guests including Churchill and Hitchcock at the legendary La Mamounia hotel, set in opulent royal gardens.
South of Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains make for an easy day trip to discover traditional Berber villages and head out on scenic hikes to waterfalls. For a more relaxed experience, spend the night; the stand-out place to stay here is Kasbah Tamadot, Richard Branson’s glorious mountain retreat. A little further south, Ouarzazate is known as the gateway to the Sahara Desert. It’s also Morocco’s movie superstar; films such as Gladiator, The Mummy and Lawrence of Arabia have featured the city’s impressive fort-like kasbah and rugged rural landscapes.
Visitors keen to explore more of Morocco’s culture should venture north. At the tip of the country, Tangier is a major port city that was once a favourite haunt of famous authors and celebs. It showcases Moorish, colonial and Art Deco architecture, as well as splendid views of the Mediterranean. For maximum Instagram likes, head to Chefchaouen – an otherworldly escape inland of Tangier in the Rif Mountains, where the buildings of the old town are all a striking shade of blue.
The large city of Fez was Morocco’s capital until 1912 and today it bursts with museums, mosques and markets. The walled medina is the city’s most popular attraction – take a step back in time and wander some of the 9,000 labyrinthine streets that make Marrakech’s medina feel like a straightforward grid. On the north-west coast, Morocco’s often-overlooked capital, Rabat, is a pleasant and walkable city with a 12th-century kasbah, attractive medina and sandy beach. Casablanca completes northern Morocco’s major destinations – the country’s largest city has a frenetic, youthful and urban vibe with a host of up-and-coming businesses and modern buildings.
Moving on to a slower pace of life, Morocco’s sweeping coastline is dotted with a handful of top beach resorts. From Marrakech, it’s a two-and-a-half-hour drive or a short hop in your private jet to chilled-out Essaouira. As well as miles of golden sands, this hip and laid-back beach town has enchanting souks, smart galleries and stylish restaurants. The medina is an attractive spot to wander around and a great example of a late 18th-century fortified town. Further south, buzzing Agadir is Morocco’s premier beach getaway thanks to its sunny climes, sandy beach, clean waters and plentiful drinking holes.
