Private jet charter to Mallorca
Mallorca is one of Europe’s most popular vacation spots with its hot summers and spectacular coastline stretching over 340 miles. Millions of sun-seekers flock to this Balearic island each year and it’s gained a reputation as a party destination – but you don’t have to scratch too far below the surface to find the ‘real’ Mallorca with its hidden-away coves, charming mountain villages and the relics of over 8,000 years of human history. Capital of both Mallorca and the Balearic archipelago, Palma is a city of two halves. On the one hand, it’s a popular resort with plenty of lively nightspots; while on the other it’s a typical Mediterranean urban hub with plenty of charming architecture. For the latter, head to the Old Town, where you can stroll through narrow alleyways and shaded avenues lined with restaurants and cafés. The skyline here is dominated by the grand Santa Maria Cathedral, the world’s second-tallest Gothic cathedral, which took nearly four centuries to complete. Further west, the 14th-century Castell de Bellver sits in a beautifully elevated position overlooking the port with pretty grounds and a museum chronicling the city’s history.
Mention Mallorca to most northern Europeans and they’ll probably think of the seasonal mega-resorts of Magaluf and El Arenal. These renowned party towns sit on the Bay of Palma and draw huge crowds of 18- to 30-year-old revellers every summer. For a more family-friendly beach escape, head instead to either Badia de Pollenca or Badia d’Alcudia on the northeast coast; quieter bays that are blessed with long stretches of sand lapped by turquoise waters and scenic hilly backdrops – along with plenty of attractions and activities to satisfy all ages. There are also several traditional beach resorts such as Cala Ratjada up in Mallorca’s far-flung north-eastern corner.
Mallorca isn’t just about the beach; the island also boasts some pretty spectacular mountain scenery. The Serra de Tramuntana range rises up dramatically from the north coast, offering an authentic glimpse of rural Mallorca with its awe-inspiring hillscapes, winding roads with far-reaching views, towering sea cliffs hiding untouched coves and traditional villages that seem frozen in time. The best way to explore the region is by hiring a car or renting a bicycle and following the coastal route Ma10, which hugs hillsides and clifftops between the towns of Andratx in the southwest and Pollença in the northwest. With its many switchbacks and precipitous drop-offs, it’s not a drive for the faint-hearted, but must-sees along the winding route include the look-out spots of Mirador de Ricardo Roca and Torre del Verger; plus the picture-perfect artists’ enclave of Deià, a tiny village that’s drawn creative minds and bohemian travellers since the 1930s. Another unmissable attraction is the pilgrimage site of Santuari de Lluc, a 13th-century Moorish monastery surrounded by mountain scenery.
Further inland and away from the Ma10 route, Mallorca’s highest village, Galilea, sits 460m above sea level. Keep an eye out for free-roaming goats as you pass through and take some time to soak up the sleepy mountain village atmosphere. The region is also a popular hiking destination, with hundreds of miles of trails crossing the hills and following the coastline. Ranging in difficulty, length and elevation gain, the trails are suitable for a range of fitness levels and a great way to explore northern Mallorca’s beauty. Another popular walking destination is the Parc Natural de la Peninsula de Llevant in the Serres de Llevant, a smaller mountain range in the island’s eastern corner. The vistas here may not be as dramatic as in the Tramuntana range, but there are fewer people and some real off-the-beaten-track trails.
