About this aircraft

• Originally called the Astra SPX, the first variation of the Gulfstream G100 was the IAI 1125 Astra in 1989, with subsequent upgrades including the IAI 1125 Astra SP and IAI 1125 Astra SPX. It was renamed the G100 after Gulfstream took over marketing for the aircraft in 2001.
• The interior is typically configured for seven passengers, with an extra seat in the enclosed lavatory if required.
• The Gulfstream G100 was designed to travel long distances and newer versions boast coast-to-coast range in the United States.
• Models fitted with an extension fuel tank have baggage space for six suitcases, while those without one can fit even more.
• Production of the G100 ceased in 2006 as attention turned to the G150.

Although most G100s are now quite dated, many have newly-fitted interiors and are still good charter solutions.

Interior design

There’s a range of possible configurations for the Gulfstream 100’s cabin. A typical layout seats seven passengers, with a two-seat divan in the front and a four-seat club section at the rear. There’s also a small galley in the front and an enclosed lavatory at the rear.

Technological features

The original 1125 Astra was powered by two Garrett TFE731-3A-200G turbofans that produced 3,000 pounds of thrust each. Newer G100s have two Honeywell TFE731-40R geared turbofans providing 4,250 pounds of thrust each. The aircraft can reach its highest speed of around 0.84 Mach at an altitude of 41,000 feet.

Early G100s are fitted with Rockwell Collins ProLine 4 avionics, although some retrofitted models feature the newer ProLine 21 system. The upgrade replaces CRT displays with LCDs and includes Rockwell Collins’ Integrated Flight Information System (IFIS) with high-resolution charts, enhanced navigation maps, and weather data including NEXRAD.

History

The first edition of the Gulfstream G100 was designed by Israel Aerospace Industries subsidiary Galaxy Aerospace. Named the IAI 1125 Astra, it was based on the IAI Westwind business jet and made its debut flight in 1989.

The 1125 Astra SP followed, featuring modified aerodynamics, improved range, upgraded avionics and a revamped interior. This was upgraded to the IAI 1125 Astra SPX, which first flew in 1994 with new Honeywell turbofan engines and winglets.

After General Dynamics acquired both Gulfstream and Galaxy Aerospace, Gulfstream began producing an updated version of the Astra SPX in 2001 and renamed it the G100. The aircraft underwent no updates or modifications during its production run, which ended in 2006 as Gulfstream concentrated on the larger G150.

Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation is an American aircraft company based in Savannah, Georgia and a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Dynamics. The company originated in the late 1950s when Grumman Aircraft Engineering Co. developed a twin-turboprop business aircraft called the Grumman Gulfstream I (G-I) at its facilities in Bethpage, New York.

Gulfstream now designs, develops, manufactures, markets and services the latest business jet aircraft and has produced more than 2,000 aircraft since 1958.
