CESSNA CITATION CJ2 AND CJ2 PLUS

CESSNA CITATION CJ2 AND CJ2 PLUS

  • Passengers 6

Based on the design of the successful CJ1 and CJ1+, but with a cabin 20% longer than their predecessors and a faster cruise speed, the Cessna Citation CJ2 and CJ2+ remain among the most popular private jets to charter.

About this aircraft

  • The Cessna Citation CJ2 (Model 525A) is an upgrade of Model 525 (CJ/CJ1/M2).
  • Able to fly six passengers for up to almost three hours, the CJ2 and CJ2+ are ideal for short trips like Paris to Frankfurt or Munich to San Sebastián.
  • Both aircraft are renowned for their low purchase prices and operating costs.
  • The CJ2 has enough space in the hold for six large suitcases and three carry-on items. That’s enough for one suitcase per person if six are flying.
  • The CJ2+ launched in 2006 with a more modern aviation system and lower fuel consumption. The upgraded variant can also reach an altitude of about 7,600 metres several minutes faster than its predecessor.

The first CJ light jet took off over 30 years ago and the series has since evolved to match the needs of modern-day customers, with the CJ2 entering the market in 2000. Although Cessna has since upgraded the line even further, the CJ2 remains a popular choice for private jet customers to this day.

Interior design

The CJ2’s cabin can comfortably accommodate seven passengers on a chartered flight (an eighth passenger can sit in the cockpit during non-chartered journeys). The baggage compartment is comparatively large compared to others in its class, with enough space for at least six large suitcases and a few items of hand luggage.

The Cessna CJ2’s roomy interior comes with a fully stocked refreshment centre and an enclosed lavatory at the back. Other amenities may include power outlets, a passenger flight phone and a hot coffee station. This quiet, comfortable jet is a great option for clients looking to book a short- or mid-range business or leisure trip at an affordable price.

Interesting facts to learn before you fly

  • Both the CJ2 and the CJ2+ can be flown by only one pilot, supported by modern avionics systems that significantly reduce the workload in the cockpit.
  • Due to its popularity, these jets are readily available to charter. While over 60% are based in the United States, they’re also often found in Europe.
  • Even the newest models are several years old. If travelling on a brand new private jet is particularly important, consider the upgraded Citation CJ3 or CJ3+.

Technological features

Both the CJ2 and the CJ2+ have industry-leading Rockwell Collins integrated flight information systems and two Williams/Rolls-Royce FJ44-2C turbofan engines, which deliver 2,400 lbs each of thrust on takeoff (400 lbs more than the CJ1 and CJ1+). The jets can take off in 3,420 feet at sea level, or 5,080 feet on a runway at an altitude of 5,000 feet.

History

Model 525 of the Cessna CitationJet series set the groundwork for the subsequent CJ, CJ1, CJ1+, CJ2, CJ2+, CJ3, and CJ4 models. The CJ2 is an upgrade of the CJ1/CJ1+ that was first delivered in the year 2000, with over 240 built – the vast majority of which are still in operation today.

Introduced in 2006, the CJ2+ offers even better fuel efficiency, increased range, improved climb rate, better takeoff performance and increased useful payload, as well as a redesigned cabin for extra soundproofing, making it a significantly more comfortable ride for passengers.

Manufacturer

The Cessna Aircraft Company is a Kansas-based general aviation manufacturer dating back to 1927, when farmer and mechanic Clyde V. Cessna assembled a French Bleriot from a kit using his own water-cooled engines. Cessna became famous for manufacturing small piston-powered aircraft for private and business use.

After producing Cessna T-50s for the US Army and Canadian Air Force in the mid-1900s, the company expanded to manufacture corporate jets and has become a leading private jet manufacturer with its extremely popular Citation XLS range.

Cessna was bought by General Dynamics in 1985, before global conglomerate Textron took over in 1995. Textron specialises in creating bespoke aircraft and also manufactures Beechcraft and Hawker jets. Today, Cessna produces numerous turboprops, pistons and private jets.

Cost

The price of a used Cessna Citation CJ2 ranges from around $1.8 million for a 2000 model to $2.4 million for a2006 model.
